Stress. We all know what it is and we would all like to get rid of it in times. It is not always so easy, especially not, if you have no proven technique that works for you!
In this article we will present you with some proven techniques that can give you some inspiration and maybe give you the motivation to try with a new method you haven't thought of until now. Enjoy!
Meditation is one of the oldest methods known to man for relaxing the mind. There are many different meditation techniques. What they all have in common though, is shifting the focus from the inner chatter to another point of focus, such as, for example, the breath. In meditation, we strive to change our point of focus away from our stress to a more soothing thing - Our love for others and ourself, our appreciation of life, our breath... you name it! For gaining insight into this field, we can recommend the talks by Alan Watts on the subject.
Heavy metal might not be the best choice with this one. But even heavy metal can help some people get rid of their inner turbulences. Music is a very individual thing and we strongly believe that there is the right tune for every situation. Nevertheless, speaking more generally, slower, calming and rather positive music, definitely seems to be the better choice if you are aiming to get into a relaxed state of mind. Try with some „Raggae Therapy“ on Youtube!
The one thing that will always be a sure bet in bringing you back to your core, is nature. Have a walk in the woods, climb a mountain, run through the fields or simply lay on the beach and listen to the waves rolling in. In no time you will find yourself in a relaxed state of mind, there's no second thought or further explaining needed for this one!
Light some candles, turn off the phone, and just allow yourself to relax in the warm water for a while. It will slow you down, it will give you new energy. Also, try with some bath oils and, if you have the chance and a bathtub that allows it, also with some nice company. It doesn't really get much more relaxing than that...
We are living in times where we spend a rather big part of our days staring at some electrical devices, at least the most of us do. Set some time apart every day to read, it will not only allow you to learn and gain new insights, it will also enable you to stop your own inner chatter and dive into the thought processes of another person. This can be a very relaxing and soothing thing to do, but make sure you choose the author wisely. The theories of Nietzsche might not be as calming as, for example, the works of Paulo Coelho.
Sometimes, we are just to hard on ourselfs. We all are. This is also the reason for the utter importance friends have in all of our lives. They can give us a new perspective, make us understand that we might be acting to harsh with our own persona in a certain situation. And we can make them understand the same thing in return. Good friendships are a soothing exchange of mutual appreciation for each other. So be vulnerable and make some space for friendly advice in your life!
You might not be the next Picasso, but that shouldn't be the goal from the very beginning. Painting, just for the joy of it, can be an incredibly fun and relaxing thing to do. Use your imagination, let your logical thinking mind relax for a moment and be creative. There are no rules and no expectations placed on you here. Maybe just draw an Elephant on a unicycle and have a laugh at it. Could be fun!
This technique is specially rewarding in the long run, but once you get to a certain point, you will not want to go back. Music, they say, is the language of the soul. By gaining the skill to play an instrument, you will have the key to listen to your soul, you will be able to have a direct conversation with it. It takes time, it takes discipline and it takes effort, but it is worth every little bit of it. By playing music, you can allow your body and mind to get into total harmony. This can be one of the most rewarding things we can experience as human beings - Getting lost in the flow for a while!
Write it down, let it out. The reason for having build up stress, often times is the accumulation of thoughts, ideas, duties and so forth. By writing them down, you can release a fair share of them and make space in your mind. You can gain new perspectives by actually seeing your own written words on paper. A lot of very influential and successful people were and are writing journals. It can also help you with staying focussed and making space in the mind for the new things waiting in line. A totally personal and rewarding experience - Give it a go!
