Ginger is a plant that has been used as a culinary spice and medicine for thousands of years. It's a winter-warmer that can put a fire in your chest and a unique and tantalizing taste on your tongue. There are many benefits other than taste to be had from ginger, and including it in our slow juice has been a real success.

The part of the ginger plant that is actually used as a spice, medicine and juice ingredient is its root. Depending on the variety, the flesh can be either be yellow, white or red in color. The root itself is often described as horn-shaped, and can also be quite gnarled in appearance. Don’t let appearances deceive you though, there is a lot to be had here.

Native to Southeast Asia, ginger has been used for thousands of years, and is a large part of Chinese medicine in the treatment of several health problems. Like many vegetables and fruits, ginger was spread throughout Europe by the Romans, who imported it from China. It quickly grew in popularity as a highly aromatic and trendy spice. However, due to the distance to china, ginger was an extremely expensive and rare spice (although demand was high). To try and combat this, Spanish colonists took it to parts of South America to grow, from where they then transported it back to Europe. Today ginger is a very common spice, and is predominantly produced in Jamaica, India, Indonesia and Australia.
