Broccoli is a very commonly seen vegetable that seems to garner a love it or hate it relationship with most people. It is a dinner time favorite that can be found being severed on the plates of most Europeans, offering up its strong tastes and aromas to anyone who wants them. But broccoli’s popularity as a dinner time regular doesn’t just stem from its flavors. Broccoli is extremely rich in nutrients, and has many benefits to offer.
Native to the Mediterranean, broccoli is a member of the cabbage family, and is essentially a large edible flower. It produces stalks covered in a thick forest of florets that can be used both raw and cooked. There are now quite a lot of varieties of broccoli, and they can vary in color from the deepest greens all the way to purple.
Broccoli is thought to have originated from the Roman Empire, where it was selectively bred from wild cabbage. It was then spread throughout the empire in Europe, as well as to parts of Asia, where it has remained ever since.
