Not all sports require investing into training clothing. You can go to the gym in your old pants or do yoga in a funny T-shirt. However, when it comes to running, picking a right pair of shoes is very important.
Some might say you are able to run in any footwear you like. That’s true: you can even run barefoot as well. However, this will only do for the occasional run. Otherwise, investing in proper shoes is very important, whenever you are a beginner runner or a person who has successfully run a couple of marathons.
Why does it matter? Well, here are some reasons.
Not all of us actually know how to run right. Not all of us are able to run in a comfortable environment. Various surfaces have various impact on our feet: running on an asphalt road is much harder for them than running on sand, for example.
Good running shoes ensure that no matter where you are running and how you are running, your feet will be protected a bit more. While it’s not enough to eliminate the risk of injury completely, it will definitely be helpful, especially for beginner runners.
How long could you run if you’re not feeling comfortable? Probably, not long enough.
Running affects our feet much harder than walking: they start to swell and sweat, they need to breathe. Not all shoes (and even running shoes) are able to handle all these effects well.
However, the good ones definitely can. They are designed to fit your foot better, to provide the necessary ventilation, and to offer the right cushioning. That’s why when you choose the right shoes, things like blisters and sore feet will bother you much less often.
As we’ve already mentioned above, proper running footwear is designed to fit your foot better. Moreover, it also feels lighter than other footwear. This means you’ll feel less weight on your feet and will be able to run easier and faster.
So if you plan on turning your occasional running into a habit, you should definitely try looking for some nice running shoes. However, for some of us, it isn’t as easy as it seems. The stores are filled with various footwear that differs by brand and price, and if you are a beginner runner, you’ll probably struggle with choosing the right one. After all, no one wants to pay too much for shoes that aren’t even needed at their current fitness level.
That’s why we also want to offer you some tips on choosing the right running shoes.
Think about whether you want to simply run or to train for a run. If second, think about the distance you would like to run. Then try to evaluate your current fitness level.
Beginner runners usually need something more protective, while the experienced ones might aim for something more durable. Moreover, there are also different categories of runners based on how many kilometers a week they run, so it’s important to know this number too.
Sure, good running shoes are usually pricey. They are made from high-quality materials and with the help of the latest technologies, and that comes with a price. Choosing the shoes of a well-known brand instead of cheap ones can be a wise decision when it comes to running. However, this still doesn’t mean that you have to spend a lot.
For example, many famous brands have previous versions of a certain model. Such versions are usually also good but cost less at the same time. So if you like a certain model but aren’t sure you can afford it, try looking for previous versions of it.
Your feet can swell during a run. You have to take it into consideration, so you don't end up with expensive shoes that feel too small. Try keeping that in mind and choosing shoes that do have a bit of free space (a thumbnail’s worth would be enough).
There’s one important thing left to remember: don’t throw away your old shoes once you have bought new ones. Usually, it takes time to adjust to new footwear, especially when it comes to running. Keeping an old pair of shoes nearby and switching pairs for a couple of first runs can make the transition easier.
