As winter approaches many of us will be turning to hot, heartening drinks to see us through the cold, dark days and nights. There is nothing nicer than snuggling up in your living room, lighting a fire and sipping on a hot drink as the weather beats down outside. With this is mind, here are our top 5 healthy hot drinks!
Ginger tea has a nice spicy flavour that perfectly complements the winter season. It is full of healthy compounds, and is even known to reduce nausea and digestive problems. To make, get some fresh ginger and simmer in water for 10-15 minutes. You can liven up the flavour further with some fresh lemon juice, or a little bit of honey.
If plain ginger tea is not enough, then you can go one step further with a mulled pineapple ginger punch. It has a great spicy, fruity flavour for those evenings spent in front of the fire. To make it (per person) add 1 cup of pineapple juice and 3 slices of freshly cut ginger into a pan. Bring it to a simmer and then add 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 cinnamon stick, 2 whole cloves and a dash of pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer a further 10 minutes, then strain and enjoy!
This is a great drink for when you have cold-like symptoms, the bromelain in the pineapple is a natural decongestant and the warm drink will ease your throat – not to mention the ginger will help settle any upset stomach you may have.
It may not sound fancy, but a cup of hot water with the juice of half a lemon is absolutely full of nutritional and antioxidant goodness. The warm drink will sooth your throat as the vitamin C and potassium of them lemon bolster your body.
This hot beverage is extremely soothing, and can even help reduce inflammation. To make it, add (per person) 1 cup of milk and ½ a teaspoon of brown cardamom seeds into a small saucepan. Heat it until it begins to simmer, then remove it from the heat and add 3 teaspoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix together and allow too steep for 5 minutes before drinking.
