Whether it is toast in the morning, or a sandwich at lunch, most of us eat bread at some point throughout the day. The problem is though, is that bread isn’t actually that healthy, not even wholegrain bread. So next time you think of putting a sandwich together, think about the possible alternatives as well.
There are a few reasons bread is unhealthy. First, it is loaded with carbs – to the point where a sandwich can cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Secondly, it contains high amounts of gluten, which is hard for the body to digest. Lastly, it is pretty much devoid of all other beneficial nutrition, so you are simply eating empty calories.
Now don’t get us wrong, a small amount of bread isn’t going to cause you any major problems, it’s just when it is eaten constantly. The following are all alternatives to bread that can help you cut down on your intake, and lead a much healthier life.
Now you may argue that this is still a bread, which is true; but often the bread to filling content of a pita bread sandwich is much lower, and if you pick a wholegrain variety, it ends up much healthier than standard sliced bread. Its pocket shape is also convenient for making healthy lunch alternatives. For example, you can stuff it with protein rich black beans, salsa and avocado for a Mexican twist!
Another type of bread, but much like the above, has a much better filling to bread ratio.
Aubergine can be a great alternative to bread! Simply cut it lengthways, lightly grill, and then fill with your favourite sandwich fillings.
Get hold of a sweet red pepper, cut it in half, take out the seeds and fill it up with tasty goodness. Bell peppers are full healthy nutrients and flavonoids, making lunchtime a much healthier occasion.
Using a large lettuce leaf instead of bread is an excellent alternative. Lettuce contains healthy amounts of potassium and folate – something that can’t be said for bread; and it will drastically reduce your calorie intake. Just wrap up your sandwich fillings, and away you go!
Hollowed out cucumber half’s are the perfect base for a healthy tuna sandwich filling. It’s a low carb, low calorie alternative to the gigantically unhealthy sub!
As you can see, it only takes a little bit of imagination to come up with new, bread free ways of enjoying your food. Don’t be afraid to experiment, there are all kinds of ways of to cut out a little bit of the bread from your life. Just don’t get too bogged down, a bit of bread every now and again is fine, and if you don’t enjoy your food, staying healthy can become more of a chore than a lifestyle choice.
